Coordinated Control Strategies for SVCs of Large Capacity

The Holeta substation Static Var Compensator(SVC) project in Ethiopia consists of three parallel connected SVCs each with an installed capacity of 0 to 300Mvar at 400kV Bus.The total rated capacity of the Holeta SVC is 0 to 900Mvar making it one of the largest SVC in the word. The following paper is focused on the parallel operation of SVCs and coordinated control mode, when the coordinated control methods and strategies of the three SVCs in the same Bus has been implemented in coordinated control units (CCUs).The strategies contains not only the three basic control functions such as manual reactive power control, single point voltage control, dead band voltage control, but also the supplementary functions such as low voltage control, power oscillation damping control, gain supervision, secondary voltage limitation, voltage transformers(VT) circuit supervision etc.The results of the RTDS (Real-Time Digital Simulator) test for the control strategies are further discussed in the paper.
