Relay Coordination of Highly Meshed Distribution Grids in the Presence of Volatile Infeed and Power Flow Control
This paper states characteristic phenomena of meshing, volatile infeed and power flow control in distribution grids.Need-based modification of grid topology like closed-ring operation and interconnection of distribution grids at medium voltage level, varying short-circuit contribution of distributed generation and active power flow controllers affect the protection system. This causes difficulties protection engineers need to be aware of.A schematic grid model facilitates the investigation of those non-traditional challenges for distribution system protection.Firstly, the characteristic effects are separately exposed, described and confirmed.Secondly, the paper pictures the influence on relay settings and relay coordination in general.Eventually, suggestions to overcome protection system problems are proposed.
