Cable Fault Detection (CFD) System Employing Remote Terminals without DC Power Supply Using Digital Communication over Optical Fibers
This paper describes a cable fault detection system(CFD) employing fiber optic digital communication and remote terminals having no DC power supply. For many years, analog pilot wire relays (PWR) have been used for CFD because a DC power supply is not generally available at cable head-ends.The authors have developed a remote device, which is installed at the cable head-end, which is able to be powered by either the fault currents or the flow of power through the cable, and transmit digital fault current data over an optical fiber. The paper reviews the architecture implemented to realize the key features of the device, and presents the result of the field evaluation, and the response of the CFD for a practical system.
