Continuous Trip Coil Monitoring

  The circuit breakers in electrical power systems are crucial components which are relied upon to clear faults within critical clearance times.These breakers operate according to the commands received from the trip circuit which contains the trip coil Conventional testing of these breakers normally requires taking them out of service which has to be planned in advance and could be very time consuming.In this paper, a continuous trip coil monitoring algorithm is proposed using the current and voltage measured from the trip circuit.It is dedicated to employing an on-line condition monitoring for trip coil current signature of circuit breaker.The trip coil current refers to the current passed through the trip coil during the whole tripping process.The solution proposed in this paper is to compare the measured trip coil signature with a saved reference trip coil signature which is obtained and stored during commissioning.The comparison is performed based on a correlation technique.And the test results have validated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by performing different simulation scenarios using Matlab/Simulink.
