Dynamic analysis and associated air blast of the Wenjia valley rock avalanche triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Sichuan, China
On May 12,2008,a catastrophic rock avalanche was triggered by a M8.0 earthquake at Mianzhu,Sichuan,China. This catastrophic event destroyed several villages and caused 48 causalities. The landslide involved the failure of about 27.5 Mm3 of sandstone from the source area. The displaced materials travelled about 4,022 m with a descent of about 1,443 m,and the final volume is accumulated to be about50.0 Mm3.To provide information for hazard zonation of similar type of landslides in the same area,we used a dynamic model (DAN3D) to simulate the run-out behavior of the displaced landslide materials, and found that a Vollemy model could provide the best performance in simulating this landslide. The DAN-3D simulation results (Fig.1) show that landsliding experienced about 150 s.
