Image correlation of multi-temporal optical satellite for landslide deformation monitoring

Landslides are a major natural hazard threatening infrastructures and human settlements.A reliable decision should be based on a deep understanding of the landslide behavior. The geometric and kinematic characterization of landslides is a key factor in understanding the mechanisms of movement.Recently, remote sensing has become an important tool to investigate landslide kinematics with the ability to obtain spatially distributed data and without the need for physical access to the site. The objective of this work is to present an efficient methodology to monitor the horizontal ground displacement and strain filed of continuously active landslides from space-based optical images analyzed with a digital image correlation technique.Analyzing these deformations allows a better understanding of the causes and mechanisms of the events. The performance of the method was evaluated on a series of images acquired on the Xi-shan landslide (Li County,SiChuan) over the period 2012-2013.The monitoring imageries consist of ZY-3high-resolution images. The VHR satellite imageries were orthorectified with a high resolution DEM interpolated from UAV.
