Application of BOTDA in Performance Monitoring of GFRP Soil Nails
In this paper, the full-distributed sensing technology of Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Analysis (BOTDA) is briefly introduced. This technology has been applied for monitoring the performance of GFRP soil nails in Hong Kong. The full strain profiles along GFRP soil nails were measured by sensing fibers using the BOTDA instrument. Before the field application, calibration tests were conducted in the laboratory with comparison of traditional strain gauges. The feasibility of the BOTDA technology for measuring distributed strains along GFRP soil nails has been proved in the calibrations tests.Special sensing optical fibers were installed along a few GFRP soil nails which were used for reinforcement of newly excavated slopes in Hong Kong. The detail of the installation method is presented.Monitoring results are presented and analyzed.Distributed axial force profiles along the GFRP soil nails are obtained from the swain results.Advantages of BOTDA for performance monitoring of GFRP soil nails under excavations are demonstrated in this research project.
