A model research of land subsidence based on BOTDA technique

Excessive groundwater withdrawal can result in land subsidence which may cause damages to infrastructure, buildings and may result in tides moving into low-lying areas. As a result, a proven and effective monitoring method which can evaluate the damage accurately become extremely important. This paper trying to research the dynamic deformation during the simulating process using a newly developed Pulse-Prepump Brillouin Optical Tune Domain Analysis (PPP-BOTDA) sensing technique.A cylinder box model filled with three soil layers is designed to simulate confined aquifer and water-resisting layer. The model preliminary revealing the mechanism of land subsidence in the angle of microscopic, and the results indicate that the fibers categories and different installing methods can obviously affect fibers responding to soil deformation: fibers with 1.2mm protective coating(1.2mm fiber) are more sensitive to detect strain than fibers with 2mm protective coating(2mm fiber) at the same condition, and tensioning fibers are more sensitive to detect compressive strain than loosing fibers, which indicate that appropriate fiber categories and suitable installing methods are been proved feasible and advantaged than traditional methods in monitoring land subsidence.
