Investigation of phase-sensitive OTDR trace distortion resulting from the laser frequency drift and its compensation approach
Phase-sensitive OTDR has the ability to detect dynamic disturbance to fiber at any location by monitoring the interference fading speckle pattern variance of the φ-OTDR trace through continuous probe pulse injection.However, even if no external disturbances are applied on the fiber under test, φ-OTDR trace will keep distorting with time slowly.This trace distortion results in a higher noise level and make it challenging to detect low-frequency external disturbance.In this paper, laser source frequency drift is proved to be a major contributing factor to phase-sensitive OTDR trace distortion.In the experiment, the relative lasers frequency drift can be detected to a precision of 200kHz and an approach is proposed to compensate the trace distortion resulting from laser frequency drift.
