JFE Steels Recent Development of Ironmaking Technology

1 Introduction The Japanese steel industry, which emits major part of energy-originated CO2 in the business sector, has promoted short-term developments and investments to comply with the Japan Iron and Steel Federations voluntary action plan in parallel with developing plans for drastic CO2 mitigation programs for the post-Kyoto Protocol period. In integrated steel works in Japan, approximately 70% of CO2 emissions are generated in the ironmaking process1.Therefore,low carbon originated reducing agent, such as coke or pulverized coal (PC) operation in the blast furnace is required in order to reduce CO2 emissions.
