Carbothermic Reduction Behavior of Iron Oxide/Carbon Composite under High Pressure

  In order to decrease greenhouse gas emissions from steel industry,a proactive use of alternative reducing agents like hydrogen is being examined in the projects such asULCOS among EU countries and COURSE 50 in Japan.In contrast,studies to solve the problems caused by the recent remarkable change of iron ore properties are also an urgent task.In this mean,it is important to develop more flexible ironmaking technologies to cope with both changes of the environmental and resource conditions.In this study,an electric furnace to realize an experiment of iron ore reduction under the condition up to 10MPa and 1200℃was made in order to examine the effect of pressure on the carbothermic reduction of iron oxide/carbon composites,which possesses a potential of fast and low temperature reaction by ensuring a close contact among particles.Under higher pressures,significant increases can be expected for the residence time and the amount of reductant gas within the composite and for heat transfer rate.Especially,application of iron ores containing a large amount of combined water may lead to further improvement of reduction efficiency,because they become more porous after the decomposition of combined water.In the present report,major performances of the furnace and the reduction behavior of composite samples are given.
