Study on Potential Application and Implementation Strategy of Decentralized Wastewater Reuse in Northern China
Water resource scarcity in northem China can be attributed to low levels of total precipitation and extreme seasonal variation in rainfall patterns. The severe water pollution exaggerates the water resource shortage.A series of measures involving water saving, water pollution control and wastewater reuse have been proposed to alleviate water resource scarcity in northern China.Wastewater reuse has been considered more and more as an important way of supplementing dwindling water sources. This paper discusses the potential application of decentralized wastewater reuse (DWWR) in northern China and formulates the implementation strategy based on the analysis of domestic policy supporting, water reuse standards, available technologies, construction cost and recovery, operation and maintenance, financing, monitoring and so on.It concludes that the cost of constructing the pipe network for transporting the reclaimed water to the point of reuse is the biggest impediment to greater uptake of wastewater reuse, simplification of the pipe networks for the reclaimed water or seeking feasible solutions to the pipe distribution networks maybe the crux issue for water reuse and recycling.Decantralised wastewater reuse seems to be an effective way to reduce the main impediment to greater reuse of reclaimed water. The most important driver for the promotion of decentralised wastewater reuse is the government policy.Several suggestions to the government are proposed based on the key findings from the research.
