Constructed Wetlands as Main Alternatives to Conventional Wastewater Treatment Technologies
Recently, natural treatment systems are widely used to replace the conventional treatment systems for the treatment of different wastewaters including domestic, industrial, and agricultural wastewaters because of the multiple values and functions of the natural treatment systems.Compared with the traditional wastewater treatment facilities commonly in use, natural treatment systems require lower construction and operational costs providing both economic and ecological benefits.Among those natural treatment systems, construeted wetland is apparently one of the commonly applied system used worldwide for wastewater treatment. The classifications of types of constructed wetland has been given including the Free Water Surface system (FWS) with shallow water depth and the Subsurface Flow System (SFS) with horizontal and vertical types, with water flowing laterally through the beds filling with different media (e.g.sands,gravels),that is described in the article.
