Research of the Pollutants Tracer Experiment in the Middle Reaches of the Yellow River

Tongguan is located in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, has become one of the most heavily polluted reaches, due to receiving the polluted water of Weihe River.During the non-flood seasons, the pollutants with high concentration from the Weihe River could be regarded as the tracer to study the partial-mixing and dispersion features of Tongguan Reach in the Yellow River. In May 2011,14 sections were set in Tongguan Reach from Weihe River confluence to downstream 8 km,and 3 to 6 hydrographic measuring / water quality sampling points were set at every section. Some parameters have been measured, including hydrology and water quality elements. The mixing characteristics of the pollutants and the water quality degradation have been obtained by a tracer experiment. The result is shown that the diffusion and degradation rate were quick in the Tongguan Reach due to the effects of some factors such as channel conditions, degradation characteristic of pollutants.Ammonia and nitrogen were mixing evenly after the downstream of 8 km from the Weihe confluence.Based on the measured data,a nonlinear least squares procedure in Matlab was applied to estimate the diffusion coefficients. The analysis results show that the longitudinal diffusion coefficient Ex was 31 m2/s and the transversal diffusion coefficient Ey was 0.26 m2/s in the middle reaches of the Yellow River.
