Analysis of the Characteristics of 11·9Autumn Flood in Weihe River

Weihe River is the largest tributary of the Yellow River and is critical for the safety of the whole Kuan-chung Plain. In September 2011,there had been three successive heavy rainfalls which made water of many tributaries in the Weihe River Basin raise above the warning line and the largest flood since 1981 appeared in the section below Xianyang. At that time the maximum peak discharge at Lintong Station was 5,410 m3/s and the corresponding water level was 359.02 m,the highest level since the founding of the station in 1961.Meanwhile,Huaxian station witnessed a peak discharge of 5,260m3/s,the sixth largest peak flow since the establishment of the station in 1934 with a maximum flood level of 342.70 m.Based on field survey and relevant analysis, this article concludes that the flood has characteristics as heavy peak discharge, low sediment concentration, high water level, long duration, low peak clipping etc.,which lay a good foundation for further treatment and flood control in the Weihe River.
