The Variation Characteristics of Ice Flood and its Influencing Factors in the Inner Mongolia Reach of the Yellow River

This paper analyzed the variation characteristics of ice flood and its influencing factors in the Inner Mongolia reach of the Yellow River on the basis of the field data. The research results indicate that ice flood in the Inner Mongolia reach of the Yellow River has the characteristics of increasing along the river, rapidly rising and steeply falling, high peak and small flood volume, short duration and high water level. The reach below Sanhuhekou is the main section where ice flood peak gets magnified.Since Liujiaxia Reservoir and Longyangxia Reservoir are put into operation, the flood peak and volume of ice flood obviously increase at Toudaoguai section of Yellow River with its highest water level in an upward trend. The increase of the channel-storage increment in the reach between Sanhuhekou and Toudaoguai is the main reason that leads to the increase of ice flood peak and volume. The reaches below Sanhuhekou break up late with relatively intensive ice breakup dates, intensive release of channel storage increment and great ice flood peak increments.During the ice breakup process, the unstable rise of temperature has great impact on ice flood. The rapidly increase in temperature during the ice breakup process will lead to the breakup of these reaches in a short period, intensive release of the channelstorage increment and higher ice flood peak. The slowly increase in temperature will result in dispersed ice breakup of these reaches, separate release of the channel-storage increment and lower ice flood peak.Since the 1990s,high winter temperatures lead to the reaches above Sanhuhekou breaking up in advance and prolonging the ice breakup process. Thus, although the channel-storage increment increases in the reach between Bayangaole and Sanhuhekou, the ice flood peak increment at the section does not increased.River channel sedimentation and decreased carrying capacity are the main reason that leads to the rise of the water level of ice floods.
