Estuary Sedimentation Control Using UTSURO(Tidal Reservoir)

  The Yellow River which is the second largest in China is worldwide famous for a river with much sediment discharge and the river bed aggradation is occurring rapidly and the risk of the flood overflow increases.The authors study on river bed sedimentation control using UTSURO (a tidal reservoir surrounded artificially).In this method,a tidal reservoir is connected to the river in the tidal area,and river bed is scoured by the flow caused by the reservoir which saves water at the flood-tide and this saved water is discharged from the tidal reservoir at the falling tide.In this study,the river bed change in the Yellow River estuary part (lower than Lijin) for a long term is analyzed by numerical simulation.The obtained result of this study is summarized as follows:(1) Without tidal reservoir,the Yellow River overflows at the big flood.(2) Tidal reservoir is effective in the river bed decline or sedimentation restraint.(3) The longer the distance between the connecting point and estuary,the bigger the effect of the tidal reservoir to the upper stream reaches of the river as long as the reservoir is affected by the tide.(4) However,the longer the distance between the connecting point and estuary,the smaller the degree of the river bed decline in the downstream.(5) The tidal reservoir is able to become one of the Yellow River improvement measiures.
