Real-time Measuring the Yellow River Sediment Based on Turbidity Measurement

The measurement of sediment concentration plays a significant role in the maintenance and regulation work of the Yellow River. However, existing sediment concentration measurement systems can get accurate value at expense of consuming long time and demanding manual operations, and cannot realize fast measurement. This essay presents a novel method that is able to realize real-time measurement of sediment concentration, and confirms the theory by experiments.Inspired by the wave-particle duality of light, the author concluded a relation between turbidity and an optical intensity pattern, which is generated by a light source projecting towards the Yellow River water samples in experiments. Then a function of sediment concentration and turbidity is established by analysing optical characteristics of suspended matters in water, such as reflection and refraction rate. Therefore, the value of sediment concentration can be obtained from the optical intensity pattern, and by implementing this method real-time measurement of sediment concentration can be realized. The essay also proposes a structure of measurement device and conducts experiments. The experiment proved that this method could be adopt when sediment concentration between 10 ~70 kg/m3.
