Research and Application of a Mathematical Model for Transportation and Transformation of Pollutant in Sediment-laden Flow

This paper analyzes the impacts of the main physicochemical processes in a water-sediment-pollutant system on pollutants in water body, and based on it is derived a basic equation describing the transportation and transformation adsorbed and dissolved pollutants. An expression for impacts of sediment erosion and deposition upon pollutants is developed from the model in regard to environment changes caused by sediment exchange in the water body and riverbed. And a model of sediment adsorption dynamics based on experiments is used for study of adsorption and desorption. The model is verified according to the measured water-sediment data and the measured water quality data from the Three Gorges Reservoir area.A mathematical model for water quality of sediment-laden flow is adopted to simulate sediment movement and its impacts on water quality in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, and analyze impacts on TP by sedimentation during the Three Gorges Reservoir impoundments. The research results show that the model not only can simulate pollutant exchanges in the sediment erosion and deposition process, but also reflect a dynamic impact of sediment adsorption on water environment and can be applied to a simulation and analysis of interaction of sediment pollutants in river as well as reservoir.
