Study on Carbon Storage and Carbon Density of Crops in Kaifeng

Sequestration activities can help prevent global climate change by enhancing carbon storage in crops and soils, preserving existing crops and soil carbon, and by reducing emissions of CO2,methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O).Carbon storage and carbon density of crops in Kaifeng (known as a land of crops in China) were calculated with vegetation biomass method based on the statistical data of crop yield and cultivate area from 2000 to 2009.The conclusions are as following: ①the total carbon storage of crops increased by 21.2% from 2004 to 2009 ; ②in 2009,Qixian county had the highest carbon storage of 5 counties in Kaifeng since it was determined by crops yield and cultivate area; ③the proportion of wheat and corn in total carbon storage was high form 2004 to 2009,accounting for 53% and 36% respectively. As a result,in order to increase both agricultural production and carbon storage, the following countermeasures have been put forward: enhancement of infrastructure construction, improvement of agricultural production conditions, promotion of new agricultural technology and adjustment of crop management system.
