Research on Sub-Synchronous Damping Control for Hulunbuir-Liaoning HVDC

±500kV 3000MW Hulunbuir-Liaoning HVDC transmission system in China is designed to transmit power of thermal power plants from Inner Mongolia to the northeast of China. The turbine units within the sending area are exposed to the risk of the Sub-Synchronous Oscillation (SSO).Analysed with Unit Interaction Factor (UIF) method, three thermal power plants are found to be strongly coupled with DC transmission. Then the main aspects of designing a SSDC are introduced in details, including input signal, control goal, design method and so on.A close-loop real-time simulation system is established by connecting the Real-time Digital Simulator (RTDS) to the real Control and Protection System(CPS) that would be applied to this project. The three mass blocks rotor models of risky turbine units are built in RTDS and the relative positions between them are observed to evaluate the effect of the SSDC.The simulation results of the RTDS indicate the feasibility and validity of the proposed SSDC.
