Efforts to avoid or suppress the SSTI phenomena in Japan

The first incidence of SSR1 that resulted in damage to a generator at Mohave Power Station in early 1970s established that the SSR was induced by the resonance between the generator turbine shaft system and a series capacitor compensation system. With subsequent research, countermeasures to overcome the problem have been substantially developed. However,in recent years,a wider variety of generator types (such as photo-voltaic and wind) and many types of AC/DC converter or inverter facilities (such as HVDC lines,FACTS devices, etc.) connected to the power system can possibly produce undesirable triggers that can resonate with the natural oscillation modes of generator-turbine shaft systems.Hence, further and more detailed investigations into the building of simulation models and power system analyses are required. This paper describes the countermeasures analyses of SSTI2 phenomena associated with the two recent installation cases in Japan - the Kii Channel HVDC Transmission System and Large Capacity GCT-STATCOM3.The current experience of the application of single-phase reclosing to dedicated generator infeed lines is also described.
