Comparison of Different SSR Countermeasure Practices In China
In the past ten years,the power load of the eastern coastal of China improved quickly.Due to the distribution of China coal resources are mostly at the northern and the western of China,many long distance,large capacity,series compensated transmission lines have been built to transmit energy from pithead power plants to the load centres.To improve the transmission limitation and guarantee the stability of power supply,some economical considerations,series compensations have been installed on several transmission lines.Sub-Synchronous Resonance (SSR) is a pernicious issue in the power grid that have energy interaction of turbine-generator and series-compensated grid below synchronous frequency. Since the first report of shaft damage due to SSR at Mohave Power Plant, USA, in the early 1970s, this problem began to attract researchers’ and engineers’ attention. Nowadays, the SSR has emerged as one of the challenging topics in the field of power system stability. A number of countermeasures have been proposed and used in the past thirty-years, many papers discuss their results in theory and in practice. However, among the huge number of papers, only a few of them mentioned why the counter-measure has been chosen in practical project, and there is not a comparison of the result of these counter-measures. There are different counter-measures presented in this paper1: Blocking Filter (BF), SSR Dynamic Stabilizer (SSR-DS), supplementary excitation damping control (SEDC), thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC), and torsional stress relay (TSR) without any active measures, all these counter-measures are utilized for years in China. These plants’ SSR issues mainly caused by the series compensated transmission lines and point-to-grid transmission mode. It is on time to summarize and compare these measures’ result in the overall view. However, based on the various power grid operation conditions, the severities of SSR effect and considering the economic situations, disparate counter-measures were chosen to damp the SSR. It is tried to provide an overview of the practical SSR problems, the SSR counter-measures and their background of selection in China. Situations on more than four power plants are be introduced, including the power system situation, the operation condition, the SSR influences and the SSR severity of these plants, and the essential reason why the respective countermeasure are chosen. It also mentions some problems met when realizing the countermeasures in practical projects, how the problems finally were solved and the final results of these counter-measures. A comparison is made between these countermeasures to show their advantage and shortage. The layout of the paper is as follows. Section Ⅰ introduce some typical plants that have SSR issues, their operation conditions, SSR severity and counter-measures respectively. In Section Ⅱ, the comparative result of damping SSR. Finally, conclusions and proposes are given.
