Challenges for managing large amounts of information brought by the digital technology of protection and control systems

The use of digital technology on a large scale in protection devices brought important advances in the protection area.Due to the ease of implementation, several new protection functions, control and supervision were added to the Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED),enabling experts to more options to protect the components of the electric power system, consequently greater security.Additionally, the use of the IEC-61850 standard is well established and consolidated in Brazil as well as in other Countries. Because of that the need for the experts in protection and control to acquire new knowledge, especially in topics related to communication networks is essential. Despite the aforementioned advances, the major change introduced by digital technology brings some issues, especially those related to the large amount of parameters and information. CHESF has one of the largest electric power transmission systems of high voltage in Brazil. There are more than 18,000 km of lines operating in voltages of 500, 230, 138 and 69 kV. It is responsible for the generation and transmission of power for nearly 50 million people. CHESFs power system comprises 117 substations, consequently a large number of protective relays. Many of these devices are IEDs. The goal of this paper is to draw attention to the problems of handling and managing large amounts of data and information generated by the IEDs and how these affect the daily activities of the experts.
