Schemes for remote online modification of relay protection settings
Schemes for remote online monitoring and modification of relay protection setting are introduced in this paper,which include that by the relay protection information management system,by upgraded EMS,and by virtual communication links.Among the practical applications,the scheme that by the relay protection information management system is in the majority.In this scheme,remote monitoring and modification of settings,enabling/disabling certain protection function elements,resetting latched trip signals,etc.are completed jointly by the master station and slaver station of protection information management system that are in control centre and substation respectively.Another scheme is adding protection setting management module and IEC 60870-5-103 support package to the existing EMS system in control centre and RTU in substation. The third scheme is establishing virtual serial/Ethernet communication links between protection devices and control centre through Ethernet by a dedicated communication interface device in substation. The protection device-specific management software is run in control centre to manage the protection device in substation.The advantages and disadvantages of each scheme are analyzed and compared. Risks of remoter online modification are also analyzed, such as the impacts of the communication interruption, settings data transformation, and human errors. Solutions to these risks are put forward for the purpose of security. The application of remote online modification of relay protection settings improves the maintenance management efficiency of protection devices, supports technically the operation of unmanned substations and the remote management from control centre.
