Development of a new 3D solid-fluid coupled numerical method using DDA with SPH

This paper presents a new 3D solid-fluid coupled numerical method using DDA with SPH to meet the requirements of disaster prevention engineering. In order to couple 3D DDA and SPH,the so-called Space Decomposition and Neighbor Sorting technique for efficient contact detection is used because it can minimize the computational cost and memory requirement in the process of block-particle contact detection. In addition,a new interface module which connects the DDA module and the SPH module,is developed to evaluate the interactive force between a block and a particle. Moreover,a new criterion to determine the maximum allowable time step is adapted to synchronize the time step used in both the DDA module and SPH module is proposed. Finally,a new 3D DDA-SPH method is developed to perform simulations on not only solid mass movement in DDA and fluid flow in SPH individually but also solid-fluid interaction behavior in the coupled DDA-SPH model. As a result, the newly-developed 3D DDA-SPH method is useful and applicable in geotechnical engineering and disaster prevention engineering as well as other engineering such as hydraulic engineering, coastal and offshore engineering, etc.Particularly,it has become one of the promising numerical simulation methods for solid-fluid interaction problems such as a debris flow with huge rocks,landslide-induced tsunami and landslide dam.
