Research on empirical strength criterion and numerical manifold method for fracture network initiation and propagation

  In the present work,a novel empirical strength criterion is developed,and is used in the context of manifold method for fracture initiation and propagation.In order to investigate the influence of fracture geometries and loading conditions on the fracture initiation and propagation process,a set of uniaxial and biaxial compression tests were carried out on the gypsum specimens with RMT-150C servo-controlled testing system,which considers different fracture geometries(including single fracture,two coplanar fractures,Tshape and X-shape cross-fractures).The characteristics of fracture propagation and strength parameters under different fracture geometries and loading conditions were obtained.Then,based on strength theory and experimental results,an improved empirical strength criterion was established,which is able to describe the influence of fracture inclination angle,fragmentation degree and lateral pressure on strength of the rock mass and the path of fracture propagation.Moreover,the critical conditions of tensile and shear fracture for fracture propagation is proposed,and then is used with numerical manifold method to simulate fracture propagation.Furthermore,in the modeling,the manifold element is regarded as the basic failure element,and the failure angle is used to determine propagation direction.Finally,in the results of fracture initiation strength and propagation path with traditional Mohr-Coulomb criterion and the improved empirical strength criterion are compared,which is able to validate the proposed method.
