Development of coupled hydro-mechanical modeling by the discontinuous deformation analysis

The coupled hydro-mechanical model is developed based on thediscontinuous deformation analysis(DDA),to study the hydraulic behavior at the region near the excavated caverns ina fractured rock mass.A detail procedure on the coupling process is described first, followed by the presentation of two validation examples. The simulation results show that the coupled DDA hydro-mechanicalmodel is capable to predict the inflow rate and the hydraulic pressure distribution around the excavated caverns.Astochastic flow model is introduced to the coupled hydro-mechanical model,to study the random nature of the hydraulic conductivity distribution in a jointed rock mass.An idealisedexample is used to demonstrate the impact of the stochastic parameters on the flow rate and pore pressures. The analysis results show that even for a onedimensional flow problem, the resultant hydraulic heads and pore pressure at internal nodes fluctuate significantly in response to random variation in the conductivity fields. Moreover, the presence of no-flow joints may results in unbalanced pore pressure distribution.
