Numerical comparative study of a cohesive fracture model and linear elastic fracture model in rock bending test

This paper presents a comparative study between a mix-mode cohesive fracture model(CFM)and linear elastic fracture model(LEFM)in rock three-point bending test by using a hybrid continuumdiscrete element method(i.e.UDEC).The mix-mode CFM can well accommodate the post-peak curve in both tension and shear. In addition,it can look after the strength parameter degradation under inelastic displacement. The LEFM is a simplification of the CFM and all strength parameters in this model drops to zero once fracture starts to propagate.Comparative study shows that the mix-mode CFM has better capability of realistically reproducing the three-point bending test numerically in terms of load-displacement relationships. It also confirms that inelastic displacement during rock fracturing is one of the rock hallmarks that need to be accounted for.
