Assessment of inter-cavern containment property for underground oil storage caverns using discrete fracture network method

The inter-cavern containment property of underground storage caverns was assessed using Discrete Fracture Network(DFN)method. The fundamentals of the discrete fracture network method are described and a calculation procedure is proposed. The method was used to assess a pilot Underground oil storage facility with water curtaining system in China. The effects of water curtain pressure,inter-cavern liquid level difference, cavern spacing and joint distributions on the groundwater head distribution around the caverns were explored. It was concluded that:(1)higher water curtain pressure, smaller inter-cavern liquid level difference, and wider cavern spacing can improve the inter-cavern containment property of the facility;(2)the inclination angles of rock joints affect the prevailing seepage path in the fracture network and thus the inter-cavern containment property of the facility. It is indicated that the inter-cavern containment property of an underground oil storage project reply on a combined effect of water curtain pressure, stored liquid levels, cavern spacing, and rock joint orientations.A favorable inter-cavern containment property would not be guaranteed through increasing the water curtain pressure alone.
