Interaction forces among blocks in DDA method and its application
This study investigated the interaction forces among blocks in a Discontinuous Deformation Analysis(DDA)method.Depending on conditions, they can come in the form of impact forces among blocks. The currently used DDA program derives displacements and strains of blocks as the basic variables from global equilibrium equations in each time step. Then velocities, accelerations and stresses of blocks are obtained, the interaction forces are not usually calculated completely. In order to obtain the complete interaction forces, the global equilibrium equations in DDA were studied.A computer code has been developed to calculate the interaction forces by accumulating interaction forces after each step time.Examples were used to study the forces among blocks and the forces on an embankment against a slump-mass.The results show that DDA can be applied to calculate the interaction forces. In a landslide run-out analysis, the maximum force acting on a structure block is found to be much larger than the average force, and this aspect needs to be taken into consideration in engineering applications.
