Back Analysis of Shear Strength Parameters of Earthquake-Induced Landslide Using DDA

Evaluation of shear strength parameters of failure surface is one of the most important aspects for initiation and run-out mechanisms studies of earthquake-induced landslides.Back analysis of shear strength parameters using numerical simulation is often used.In previous study,we improved the discontinuous deformation analysis(DDA)with the aim that it can be used to accurately model the failure behaviour of joints dominated by both cohesion and interface friction angle. In this study, case history of Donghekou landslide induced by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake China,is used to validate the procedure proposed for the dynamic back analysis of shear strength parameters of the failure surfaces of earthquake-induced landslides by using the improved DDA.A real seismic record is used as excitation, the stability and run-out situations are evaluated under different shear strength parameters and the numerical simulation results are compared with the real situations.Once the stability and run-out situations consist well with the real situations and the initiation time point is reasonable, the used shear strength parameters are the back-calculated parameters.A comparison of the back-calculated parameters with the existing results, including survey and experimental results,is performed. The result shows that the proposed back analysis method is reasonable and applicable.
