Hybrid Navier-Stokes/Vortex Panel Method Applied to Aircrafts

A coupled Navier-Stokes/Vortex Lattice solver.developed for the numerical analysis of wind turbines,is applied to wings. There are three main objectives in this study. The first one aims at using this approach as an educational tool for undergraduate aerodynamics classes.based on its simplicity and computational efficiency, yet, comparable to full Navier-Stokes computation in incompressible flow. The second purpose is the extension of the hybrid method to the simulation of transonic flows. The third aim is the possibility for undergraduate aerodynamic classes to include projects on unsteady effects in two- and three- dimensions and obtain results in one or two days with a workstation using the hybrid method.such as plunging and pitching airfoil problems. In this paper, applications are proposed in several topics in aerodynamics for an undergraduate course, targeted at instructors in schools/institutions and companies.
