Hydrochemical Characteristic and Heavy Metal Distribution in Groundwater in Huaibei Plain, China
This paper expands on the hydrochemical characterization of conventional and heavy metal ions in groundwater at three different depths in Huaibei Plain,China.44 groundwater samples were collected and the chemical parameters were measured in May,2005.Through the comparison of the major ions at shallow, middle and deep groundwater, the hydrochemical classifications change from HCO3 to HCO3-Cl type with the depths, and the distillation process in shallow groundwater, anthropogenic activities, and residual medio-Pleistocene groundwater could be the reason for the elevation of Cl.9 and 18 samples out of 44 exceeds the national drinking water standard set for iron and manganese respectively. The concentration of Fe in shallow groundwater is high in southeast and southwest of the study area, and the concentration of Mn is high in all over the area except for the northwest. This may because of the frequent agricultural activities and the component of the stone in some towns.Due to the reducing condition, high TDS at some points, and adsorption by some material such as clay, organic matter, fresh sediment etc.,the Fe content is higher in deep groundwater, while some sampling points has the higher Mn content in shallow groundwater.
