Modeling the Potential Geographic Distribution of Tonkin snub-nosed Monkey (Rhinopithecus avunculus) in Vietnam
Nowadays, there is no doubt that global climate change is causing impacts on all species survival and development, especially plant-eaters.Scientists believed that if the environment changes dramatically, the risk of species extinction will be very high. Therefore, there is a need to predict the distribution of species and their potential changes in future following climate scenarios which are considered very important and worthy attention.DIVA-GIS is an open source program which could be used for mapping and analyzing spatial data.In this research,DIVA-GIS with its two different methods (BIOCLIM and DOMAIN) were applied to model the potential distribution of Tonkin snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus avunculus) and to provide distribution maps of the researched species. These maps were created by using data of the IPCCs climate change scenarios from GCM (Global climate model).Tonkin snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus avunculus) is an endemic species in the Northeast of Vietnam, and it was listed as one of 25 primates species at risk of extinction in the world and was also listed as a critically endangered species in the Red Book (IUCN Red List,Internet: last access: 28.2.2013and CITES,Internet: http:// www.cites.org,last access: 28.2.2013).Several regions in the Northeast of Vietnam are predicted to be climatically suitable for Tonkin snub-nosed monkey, particularly in Bac Kan Province and Tuyen Quang Province.
