Microbial Communities in Anerobic Methanogenic Reactors Using Algae as the Substrate

Algal blooming is becoming more and more serious in China recently. How to handle the harvested algal biomass was attracting in avoiding the secondary pollution. In the current research algae from Chaohu Lake was utilized as the substrate for anaerobic digesters to produce biogas.Iron was supplemented to promote the anaerobic digestion process. The microbial communities analysis was performed using PCR-DGGE method. Results showed that phylum Proteobacteria, phylum Bacteroidetes and phylum Chloroflexi were the major fermenting phylotypes in the 2 mM Fe-supplemented reactor. The 20 mM Fe-supplemented reactor contained fermenting-microorganism of phylum Firmicutesand phylum Proteobacteria.Besides,fermenting-bacteria also had grown in the control group which affiliated with the phylum Firmicutes and phylum Bacteroidetes. For methanogens,a high proportion of the genera Methanosarcina,Methanosaeta,Methanobacterium,Methanolinea occurred in all reactors.
