Steelmaking: Theory, Practice and Plant Performance
Application of knowledge on melt shop is demonstrated through a set of case studies undertaken during a decade long industry –academia collaborative efforts.Examples are used to primarily address the integration of theory with steelmaking practice and the attendant benefits with reference to Hospet Steels Limited,a 0.6 MMTPA,special steel plant, located in the southern part of India. It is demonstrated that performance of the 60T oxygen steelmaking furnace(EOF),Ferro-alloy consumption and recovery, dissolved hydrogen level following tank degassing, yield from ladle and tundish as well as final product cleanliness are substantially improved by adopting theory assisted steelmaking practices. Thus with a consistent blast furnace performance(SiMH~0.6 and THM~1300 ℃)and a set of inclined side tuyeres, tap to tap time of 22 minutes was achieved on a sustained basis.Similarly,by fine tuning operating conditions(viz.,temperature, slag basicity and argon purging rate),a significant portion of LC Ferrochrome addition in ladles was replaced by HC Ferrochrome during production of ball bearing grade steel, leading to substantial economic benefits.Furthermore, engineering of tank degassing practice has lead to significant improvements in final hydrogen content of steel, improving thereby product quality noticeably. These and few other cases discussed in the paper are substantiated with industrial scale operating and economic data.
