Impact of Hot Metal Properties on Steel Making Process and Its Pretreatment

  The quality of hot metal affects both process of hot metal pre-treatment as well as primary steel making.Among many other impurities of liquid iron,silicon,sulphur and carbon are the primary unwanted chemical properties detrimental to post processing.Also the impact of hot metal is very often understated.Thus there are efforts both in the blast furnace process as well as the primary steel-making processes to reduce the impurities aiming maximum yield of steel.This paper discusses impact of silicon,sulphur and liquid iron temperature in desulphurisation and primary steel making processes and about controlling and monitoring them in iron making process.Efforts have been to empirically quantify these effects with a view to improve control.The effect of hot metal temperature on metal loss in the desulphurization process and various other parameters affecting the efficiency of the desulphurization process including initial hot metal sulphur,rate of injection of reagents etc.are shown using data analysis of real time plant data of Tata steel plant.In blast furnace operation,adjustable parameters like hot metal temperature,slag chemistry,slag rate and casting parameters are adapted to control slag time ratio to reduce the final liquid iron sulphur.Poor raw material quality and bigger dimension of the furnace pose a challenge in controlling silicon%in large blast furnaces.Effect of Silicon in steel making process in terms of lime usage and yield and reduction of silicon at blast furnaces by controlling furnace thermal condition,dripping zone volume,chemistry of slag,permeability of hearth etc.is discussed here.For the purpose,special visualization techniques and models are being used for in depth process understanding and translating the learning into actionable lever for process improvement.The impact of hot metal chemistry and quality thus affects decision on raw material procurement and yield of steel making.
