Experimental Observation of Spherical Scrap Melting in Hot Metal
The melting rates of spherical scrap containing 0.1-3.7mass%carbon immersed in a bath of hot metal containing 2-4.5mass%carbon at 1300-1600℃ have been observed. The melting rate of the scrap was found to increase with increasing carbon in the scrap, carbon in the bath and the bath temperature. The solidification of the hot metal occurred to form a crust at the sphere surface in the initial melting periods, the carbon content in the crust were found to be different from that in scraps.Variation of the carbon content in scrap during melting was found insignificant.Thicker crust was found when liquid carbon and/or liquid temperature were lower.
