Competitive Electric Steelmaking: Danieli Fastarc(R) EAF

The paper describes the main features of Danieli FastarcTM EAF Technology, and the results achieved with hot metal percentage in the charge up to 60%.One of the key features of the Danieli FastarcTM EAF is the flexibility in adapting to the new tendency in steelmaking: the substitution of BOF technology with EAF technology. The paper will discuss the basic EAF design concepts and technologies for processes with utilization of hot metal up to 60%.There will be analyzed the main characteristics of the injection system and the EAF design criteria in function of the productivity request and the content of hot metal in the charge mix.Since the first experiences with hot metal the Danieli FastarcTM EAF has been continuously improved, increasing the percentage of hot metal that can be managed in EAF process without affecting the productivity. The operational results achieved in different plants working with hot metal will be shown: the results reached with different content of hot metal in the charge will allow the analysis of the EAF performances: an improvement with respect the results predicted through thermal and mass balance is highlighted. The percentage of hot metal in the charge influences the efficiency of each process in terms of thermal yield and the corresponding production of CO2,confirming the benefit to use high content of hot metal in the charge.
