Experimental Study on Calcium Treatment Optimization of Container Steel in CSP Process

In order to improve the cleanliness and castability of molten steel and lower the cost of production, the light calcium treatment in container steel was studied in thin slab casting process of Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation. The standards for light calcium treatment of container steel were given by theoretical calculation and practical data. The effect of [Ca],[Al] and [S] on inclusion modification should be taken into consideration together during Ca treatment. The aims of Ca treatment are not only to modify the solid inclusions into liquid inclusions, but also to avoid the formation of CaS.The inclusion modification at the tempreture of molten steel in tundish is most important by Ca treatment.Because of the obvious reducton of calcium content and the reoxidation of molten steel during casting, the calcium content in ladle should be enhanced to meet inclusion modification of molten steel in tundish. The evolution of the contents and inclusions in molten steel with different amount of calcium wire were also studied by industry trials. The experimental results show that total oxygen in molten steel are less than 25×10- 6 by light calcium treatment and most of inclusions in tundish are liquid calcium alinminates and CaO-Al2O3-CaS compound inclusions, which can satisfy the requirement of cleanliness steel and inclusion modification. It indicades that light calcium treatment is feasible for container steel in CSP process.
