Combined Models for Characterization of Tundish Flows in Continuous Casting of Steels

  In view of the clear differences in RTD (Residence Time Distribution) curve profile between experimental measurements and the commonly used simple combined model of a CCMT (Continuous Complete Mixing Tank) and a CPFR (Continuous Plug Flow Reactor) in series with a dead volume,two new combined models are proposed to better characterize experimental RTD curves of typical tundish flows,particularly for tundishes with a TI (Turbulence Inhibitor) in its pouring compartment.The first one is uniform CCMTs and one CPFR in series with a dead volume,and the second one is two nonuniform CCMTs and one CPFR in series with a dead volume.The application of the new models to a typical experimental measurement of a tundish with a TI in the pouring compartment shows that,both the two new models can much better represent experimental measurement than the commonly used simple combined model.For the two new models,the model with two nonuniform CCMTs is better than that with uniform CCMTs,and this is because that two nonuniform CCMTs in series provides clearer and sounder physical picture of the pouring compartment that uniform CCMTs in series.Furthermore,in view that the all the above combined models are not capable to characterize separately the pouring compartment and the downstream flow-control channel section of a tundish,a more complicated model is proposed to analyze the pouring compartment,the downstream flow-control channel section,as well as the whole tundish separately.The model is the combination of simple combined models in series.The application of the newly proposed model to typical tundishes with and without a TI in the pouring compartment show that,the new model can be used to characterize and thus optimize more precisely the pouring compartment,the downstream flow-control channel section,as well as the whole tundish.
