CFD Investigation of Fluid Flow Phenomenon in a High Capacity Twin Strand Tundish

The under standing of a fluid flow behaviour inside the tundish is important for producing the quality steel.Tundish act as a steel refining reactor in a modern continuous caster. The increase in productivity of the steel shops is leading towards large volume industrial tundishes. The fluid flow behaviour inside such large volume tundishes needs to be studied for estabilishment of the operating practices. The current work investigates the flow phenomenon in a 70 ton twin strand tundish using 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model.Dams and weirs were used as flow control devices in the present study. The effect of througput and submegence depth variations in the range of 4 to 10tpm and 255 to 345mm respectively on fluid flow characteristics was studied in the current work. The occurance of asymmetric flow behaviour due to differential flow from the strands was another novel study done in the present work. Thus, the present work provides useful information for efficient running of large capactity multi-strand tundishes.
