Influence of EMS on Solidification Structure and Centre Soundness in CC Stainless Steel Blooms

Continuous casting of stainless steel blooms for further rolling to bars is carried out at Sandvik Materials Technology. The caster is equipped with Strand EMS and Final EMS with the main objective to create a sound centre. The influence of small composition variations in type AISI 304/316 on the primary solidification mode and on the development of the equiaxed zone is discussed.By applying SEMS or SEMS+FEMS,the volume amount of pores increases in the centre region, compared to the case with no EMS.However, the size and number of larger pores in the very centre decreases.Further rolling of blooms with EMS to round bars with an elongation of 4.11 showed,by US-testing,no defect sizes > 0.2mm2.For the corresponding bars rolled from blooms cast without EMS,defect sizes up to 1.58mm2 could be detected.Bars rolled to an elongation of 3.31 showed, for the SEMS case,a defect size < 2mm2 and,for the case of no EMS,defect sizes up to 3.5mm2.The results are discussed.
