Analysis on the Transverse Corner Cracks in a Low Alloy Steel Using High Energy High Resolution X-Ray Tomography

The transverse corner cracks in a low alloy steel slab was analyzed using high energy high resolution sychrotron X-ray tomography, and the hot ductility of the steel was studied using a Gleeble 1500 thermo-mechanical simulator. The 3D morphology of internal cracks in steel was well revealed by the microtomography. It was found that the transverse corner cracks in the low alloy steel were propagated along the prior austenite grain boundaries. The hot ductility test indicated that the third brittle temperature range of the steel is 725-833℃.Combined with the crack and fracture morphology and the microstructure of the steel at different temperatures,it was concluded that the transverse crack was mainly induced by the formation of a thin layer of ferrite on the prior austenite grain boundary.
