Modelling of Slag Emulsification during Ladle Change and Tundish Filling Operation

The aim of this research work is to study a new ladle shroud design to assistance in the decrease of slag emulsification in the tundish during the ladle change operation. For this,a tundish water analogue model was design and a mathematical model was developed. The results show that using a convectional ladle shroud the molten steel is supplied with an excessive amount of energy generating strong mixing flow patterns, entrapping massive amount of slag.Furthermore, this shroud induces constantly slag suction into the bath promoting a continuous slag emulsification. The dissipative shroud results show that the proposed design induces energy dissipation before the steel enter the tundish, promoting less intense mixing patterns, and controlling considerably the slag emulsification.
