Effect of Zirconium Addition on the Characterization of γ-α Phase Transformation during Continuous Cooling in Low Carbon Steel

To reveal the function of zirconium addition on the characterization of microstructure transformation behavior in low carbon steel, the Zr-added steels and Zr-free steel were refined with vacuum induction furnace. The relationship between zirconium addition and the decomposition products of austenite during continuous cooling rate from 0.1℃/s to 30℃/s has been systematically investigated by a Gleeble-3800 thermal simulator. To further verify the effect of zirconium on the phase transformation, the microstructure characteristics of hot-rolled samples under a special Thermo-mechanical Control Processing(TMCP)process were also observed. The results reveal that zirconium can affect the starting temperatures of the austenitic decomposition and the pearlite transformation. The addition of zirconium has a significant effect in promoting the transformation of proeutectoid ferrite, and the bainite transformation is not well developed, but a suppression of the transformation is emerged. The result of the present study implies that a high cooling rate, such as above 20℃/s,should be controlled during continuous cooling to obtain bainitic structure for the Zr-containing low carbon steel.
