Applications of Modern Numerical Simulation of Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer to Secodary Refining and Continuous Casting Processes
Two application examples of numerical simulation in secondary refining furnace and solidification in continuous caster were proposed in this paper. In first example, the phenomenon of bubbles breakup and collision was considered in this model,so was the effect of temperature and vacuum in volume of bubbles. The model was applied to 100t VD furnace in steelmaking plant to simulate the gas-fluid flow in the ladle. The results matched the production status well, which validated the simulation model. In second example,a 3-D model for the heat transfer and solidification during continuous casting was developed based on the realistic roller-layout and spray nozzle distribution. The results of modifying the thick slab temperature showed that the slab temperature at the caster exit was effectively improved by decreasing the spray cooling water at the last loop of the secondary cooling zone, raising the casting speed and decreasing the pouring temperature.
