In-Situ Observation of Solidification and High Temperature Phase Transformation of Hypo-Peritectic Steels

A few investigations on peritectic transition of Fe-C binary alloy by confocal laser scanning microscope(CLSM)have been reported. But Investigations on peritectic transition of actually produced steel by CLSM were rare.In this paper, solidification and high temperature phase transformation of commercial steel with composition of 0.11%C-0.02%Si-0.56%Mn-0.035%Al-0.012%P-0.007%S were observed in-situ at very slow cooling rate from liquid by CLSM with the cylindrical specimen(Φ8 mm×3mm)to investigate the formation of δ and γ phase and the peritectic transition. And the Fe-C-X multicomponent phase diagrams created via Thermocalc Software were employed to elaborate the observed events. The results showed that:(i)with the cooling rate of 0.05K/s,the solidification mode of the tested steel was that the δ ferrite appeared from the liquid phase first;(ii)the γ phase precipitated by peritectic reaction(L + δ → γ)between the δ ferrite phase and the liquid phase around δ ferrite grain boundaries at 1485℃ and three-phase coexisted; iii)With temperature further decreasing, the liquid phase disappeared at 1476℃,the retained δ ferrite phase transformed into γ phase.
