On the Formation and Modification of Non-Metallic Inclusions in Ti- Alloyed Ferritic Chromium Steels with Special Regard to the Role of Heterogeneous Nucleation

Titanium-alloyed ferritic chromium steels have emerged to a competitive option to classical austenitic stainless steels. The addition of titanium leads to an inclusion landscape determined by Ti-containing particles, predominantly titanium nitrides(TiN).Four main types of TiN inclusions can be identified, differing in their size and morphology as well as their tendency for agglomeration.Heterogeneous nucleation becomes decisive with ongoing process time. The regulation of magnesium sources can help to improve the final steel cleanness.
